Biografie
Der Tenor Hansu Kim wurde in Seoul, Südkorea, geboren und aufgewachsen. Er begann sein Musikstudium an der Yonsei University School of Music, wo er 1998 einen Bachelor of Music mit Stipendium erwarb. Unmittelbar nach seinem Abschluss zog er in die Vereinigten Staaten, um seine Ausbildung an der Indiana University Jacobs School of Music fortzusetzen, wo er 2002 einen Master of Music mit Stipendium erlangte.
Er studierte unter der Leitung des renommierten Heldentenors James King, Kammersänger in Wien, Berlin und München, der Sopranistin Martina Arroyo, Trägerin des Kennedy Prize, sowie der Sopranistin Carol Vaness, dreifachen GRAMMY-Nominierten für die beste Opernaufnahme (1984, 1993 und 2007).
Darüber hinaus vervollständigte er seine Ausbildung durch Meisterkurse mit namhaften Künstlern wie Lucine Amara, Francisco Casanova, Lando Bartolini, Claudia Visca, Franco Silvestri, Chris Merritt und Christian Starinieri.
Im Verlauf seiner Opernkarriere hat Hansu Kim zahlreiche führende Tenorpartien an bedeutenden Opernhäusern und Festivals in den Vereinigten Staaten gesungen. Im Jahr 2006 sang er Radamès in Aida und Manrico in Il Trovatore mit der One World Symphony. Im Jahr 2008 verkörperte er Don José in Carmen mit der Bel Cantanti Opera.
Sein Repertoire umfasst außerdem Calaf in Turandot (New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, 2010), Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (Harmonia Opera am John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts – Millennium Stage, 2011) sowie Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana mit der Opera Camerata of Washington im Jahr 2012.
Seine Konzerttätigkeit war ebenso bedeutend. Er trat dreimal in der Isaac Stern Auditorium der Carnegie Hall mit der MidAmerica Productions und der New Jersey Philharmonic auf (2005, 2007, 2009).
Zu seinen Oratorienaufführungen zählen die Messe in G-Dur von Franz Schubert (2007) und die Missa in tempore belli von Joseph Haydn (2009).
Darüber hinaus gab er Galakonzerte für bedeutende Persönlichkeiten, darunter ein Konzert im Jahr 2008 für den südkoreanischen Präsidenten Lee Myung-bak sowie ein Konzert im Jahr 2010 für den Gouverneur von New Jersey, Jon Corzine.
Hansu Kim vertiefte seine künstlerischen Erfahrungen durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Ensembles wie der Utah Festival Opera, dem Dicapo Opera Theatre und Pacific Encore Performances.

Derzeit ist Hansu Kim Professor für Gesang an der Seoul Theological University School of Music in Seoul, Südkorea.

Hansu Kim had a self-centered and contained presence about Don José, which was an important component to the character. He is also extremely musical. He sings with such emotion that when you close your eyes, you feel all the happiness and the pain. And it's not just his voice, which is gorgeous, but he offers such an emotional connection that when he and Carmen sing to each other, it is like they are making love.
With conducting by Metropolitan Opera's Gregory Buchalter, Tenor Hansu Kim performed the role of Turridu in Cavlleria Rusticana with full of ernergy and solemn dignity. His voice sounded like the legendary Dramatic Tenor, Mario del Monaco.
What a glorious dramatic tenor voice! Well done throughout the role of Andrea Chénier. Hansu Kim was not afraid of presenting his glorious and free high notes. Overall, a very professional sound and vocal technique. All of his notes have excellent support, opulence and ping. The quality of sound is so professional that it was difficult to find fault! Again, there were excellent vocal quality, and ease of production. His voice was dramatic, but not over-powered or pushed. I hope Hansu Kim will be enjoying huge successes in the professional operatic field. Certainly, he will be deserved it! Just keep going!!
The spinto-dramatic tenor voice of Hansu Kim was generous. His voice demonstrated very solid technique, with ringing, and well-projected high notes that allowed him to tackle the role of Andrea Chénier. He executed this vocally very demanding role with confidence and energy. His Italian pronunciation was excellent, and he showed mastery of the text, convincingly interpreting the character of Andrea Chénier. Very well done! He is ready for the big stages!!
