Biografía
El tenor Hansu Kim nació y creció en Seúl, Corea del Sur. Inició sus estudios musicales en la Yonsei University School of Music, donde en 1998 obtuvo una Licenciatura en Música (Bachelor of Music) con beca. Tras graduarse, se trasladó a los Estados Unidos para continuar su formación en la Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, donde obtuvo un Master of Music con beca en 2002.
Estudió bajo la dirección del célebre Heldentenor James King, Kammersänger en Viena, Berlín y Múnich, de la soprano Martina Arroyo, ganadora del Kennedy Prize, y de la soprano Carol Vaness, nominada en tres ocasiones a los GRAMMY por la mejor grabación operística (1984, 1993 y 2007).
Asimismo, perfeccionó su formación a través de masterclass con artistas de gran prestigio como Lucine Amara, Francisco Casanova, Lando Bartolini, Claudia Visca, Franco Silvestri, Chris Merritt y Christian Starinieri.
A lo largo de su carrera operística, Hansu Kim ha interpretado numerosos roles tenoriles protagonistas en importantes teatros de ópera y festivales de los Estados Unidos. En 2006 cantó Radamès en Aida y Manrico en Il Trovatore con la One World Symphony. En 2008 interpretó Don José en Carmen con la Bel Cantanti Opera.
Su repertorio incluye además Calaf en Turandot (New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, 2010), Pinkerton en Madama Butterfly (Harmonia Opera en el John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts – Millennium Stage, 2011) y Turiddu en Cavalleria Rusticana con la Opera Camerata of Washington en 2012.
Su actividad concertística ha sido igualmente destacada. Se ha presentado en tres ocasiones en la Isaac Stern Auditorium del Carnegie Hall con la MidAmerica Productions y la New Jersey Philharmonic (2005, 2007, 2009).
Entre sus interpretaciones oratoriales figuran la Messa in Sol maggiore de Franz Schubert (2007) y la Missa in tempore belli de Joseph Haydn (2009).
También se ha presentado en conciertos de gala para importantes personalidades, entre ellos un concierto en 2008 para el presidente de Corea del Sur Lee Myung-bak y un concierto en 2010 para el gobernador de Nueva Jersey Jon Corzine.
Hansu Kim ha enriquecido su experiencia artística trabajando con compañías como Utah Festival Opera, Dicapo Opera Theatre y Pacific Encore Performances.
Su desarrollo vocal ha contado además con el coaching de los directores del Metropolitan Opera Steven Crawford, Gregory Buchalter y Louis Salemno, así como de los profesores Claudia Visca, Marcin Kozieł y Joëlle Bouffa de la Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (MDW) – Institut für Gesang und Musiktheater de Viena, Austria.
Actualmente Hansu Kim es profesor de canto en la Seoul Theological University School of Music en Seúl, Corea del Sur.

Hansu Kim had a self-centered and contained presence about Don José, which was an important component to the character. He is also extremely musical. He sings with such emotion that when you close your eyes, you feel all the happiness and the pain. And it's not just his voice, which is gorgeous, but he offers such an emotional connection that when he and Carmen sing to each other, it is like they are making love.
With conducting by Metropolitan Opera's Gregory Buchalter, Tenor Hansu Kim performed the role of Turridu in Cavlleria Rusticana with full of ernergy and solemn dignity. His voice sounded like the legendary Dramatic Tenor, Mario del Monaco.
What a glorious dramatic tenor voice! Well done throughout the role of Andrea Chénier. Hansu Kim was not afraid of presenting his glorious and free high notes. Overall, a very professional sound and vocal technique. All of his notes have excellent support, opulence and ping. The quality of sound is so professional that it was difficult to find fault! Again, there were excellent vocal quality, and ease of production. His voice was dramatic, but not over-powered or pushed. I hope Hansu Kim will be enjoying huge successes in the professional operatic field. Certainly, he will be deserved it! Just keep going!!
The spinto-dramatic tenor voice of Hansu Kim was generous. His voice demonstrated very solid technique, with ringing, and well-projected high notes that allowed him to tackle the role of Andrea Chénier. He executed this vocally very demanding role with confidence and energy. His Italian pronunciation was excellent, and he showed mastery of the text, convincingly interpreting the character of Andrea Chénier. Very well done! He is ready for the big stages!!
