Biography

 

 

 

Born in Bulgaria, Galia Bakalov started taking piano lessons at the age of five before studying at the “ Dobri Hristo ” High School of Music in Varna (Bulgaria). After obtaining her piano diploma, she was admitted to the National Academy of Music “ Pantcho Vladigherov ” and graduated in Opera singing in Konstanza Vatchkova ’s class. Thereafter, she perfected her skill with the “G. Pierluigi da Palestrina” Music Conservatory in Cagliari (Italy). She also took part in the master classes of Ghena Dimitrova, Montserrat Caballé, Mariella Devia and Ines Salazar .
Thanks to music, Galia travels the world to perform on the international scene and is fluent in English, French, Russian, Italian and Bulgarian, her mother tongue.
Galia Bakalov first took the stage of Sofia’s National Opera House debuting as “the Firefly” in the homonymous Opera by Victor Chuchkov .
After being awarded a scholarship from Sofia’s National Academy, she took part in the “Prague-Vienna-Budapest” International Academy in Baden bei Wien (Austria). She performed in concerts with orchestra in Sofia and Stara Zagora (Bulgaria) and sang on Bulgarian National Television.
Galia moved to Italy to soak in its culture.
Her recognised vocal versatility combined with an appreciated stage presence enable her to take on several roles ranging over the international repertoire: she debuted in the role of Juliet Brook in “The Little Sweep” as part of “Sofia Music Weeks” . She interpreted Ksenia in “Boris Godunov” of M. Mussorgsky , conducted by Maestro Metodi Matakiev in Denmark; she was Frasquita ( Carmen ) and Papagena ( The Magic Flute ) during a tournée in the United States of America. Back in her native Bulgaria at the Opera Theatre of Stara Zagora, Galia took on the roles of Violetta Valéry ( La traviata ), Gilda ( Rigoletto ) and Micaela ( Carmen ).
In 2012, Galia Bakalov was invited by the “ A. Belli ” Experimental Opera Theatre of Spoleto for the role of Violetta Valéry during the 66th Opera Season.
In April 2013, she was Violetta once more in G. Verdi ’s “La traviata” in the avant-première for the grand opening of the Anthéa Antipolis Theatre of Antibes in a Monte-Carlo Opera production conducted by Maestro Antonino Fogliani . The same year, she sang in “Amelia Goes to the Ball” by G. Menotti at the Monte-Carlo Opera conducted by Maestro Placido Domingo . There, she subsequently also took on the role of Dame Pâle in S. Prokofiev ’s “The Gambler” in 2016.
In 2017, she then wore the clothes of Giulia in G. Rossini ’s “Silken Ladder” at Ireland’s Wexford Festival.
