What is the bass
The bass is the male voice with the lowest range. The operatic tradition distinguishes the basso profondo (or basso cantante), the noble bass, the basso buffo of the comic repertoire and the bass-baritone, a borderline voice endowed with a more extended high register.
It is the voice of depth and gravitas: its full, resonant timbre confers solemnity and dramatic weight, but it can also be agile and witty in comic roles, where the rapid phrasing of the basso buffo becomes pure theatre.
