How an opera agency works
What an agency that represents and manages opera singers really does, and how meOpera carries out this work.
An opera agency is the meeting point between those who sing and those who produce opera: it represents singers, develops their careers and connects them with theatres, festivals and promoters around the world. On this page we explain what an opera artist management agency is, what it actually does, how it differs from a casting call, and how meOpera approaches this work with a transparent model.
What an opera agency is
An opera agency — also known as a management or representation agency for opera artists — is a professional structure that supports opera singers throughout their careers. It does not simply "find work": it cultivates the artist's image, presents their repertoire in the right way, nurtures relationships with theatres and follows every stage of their professional path, from the first auditions to major debuts. The goal is to ensure that each artist's voice and talent meet the most suitable opportunities.
Unlike a personal manager who looks after a single name, an agency manages a roster — a group of artists across different voice types and profiles — and engages every day with artistic directors, stage directors and promoters. This allows it to know the international opera market, to be aware of which productions are seeking a particular voice, and to propose the right artist at the right time, always in the interest of the singer it represents.
What it actually does
Representation and career development
The agency presents the artist to theatres, showcases their repertoire and builds a consistent path of growth over time, choosing the roles and productions best suited to each stage.
Relationships with theatres and promoters
It cultivates a network of contacts with opera houses, festivals, foundations and promoters, so as to identify engagement opportunities and propose its artists for the right projects.
Materials, image and communication
It looks after the biography, photographs, audio and video materials and the artist's online presence, because a well-crafted professional profile makes a difference in the assessments of artistic directors.
Practical and administrative management
It handles organisational matters — schedule, communications, documents — freeing the artist from these tasks so they can focus on study and the stage.
Agency or casting: what is the difference
A casting call is a single selection organised by a theatre or a production to choose the performers for one show: it has a beginning and an end, concerns a specific title and closes once the cast is complete. It is an event, not an ongoing relationship.
An opera agency, on the other hand, supports the artist over time: it does not offer a single opportunity, but builds a path. While a casting call looks for the right voice for one role, the agency works so that the artist is considered for many different productions, year after year. The two levels are not mutually exclusive: it is often the agency itself that presents its singers to the theatres' casting calls.
How meOpera works
meOpera is an opera singer management agency active worldwide since 2021, established as a Benefit Corporation. We represent and manage sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones and basses, as well as conductors and stage directors, developing their careers and connecting them with international theatres, festivals and promoters.
Our signature combines artistic expertise with digital tools: every artist has a carefully crafted profile, up-to-date materials and a network of contacts that works every day to identify the most suitable opportunities. We support both singers with an established career and young voices with solid training, with the same dedication.
What sets us apart is the transparency of our model: a fixed fee, no hidden commission on engagements and no exclusivity. The artist remains free, knowing exactly what they pay and what they receive.
